live in washington. only one day to go before mitt romney faces off against president obama in denver and our new nbc news/"wall street journal" poll shows voters across the nation are placing more importance on these debates than the last time a sitting president ran and was challenged. joining me chris cizilla, managing editor of post politics.com and nbc political editor mark murray. mark, first to you, go through the numbers on the new nbc news/"wall street journal" poll. others have shown tightening of the race. when you asked voters whether they are looking to these debates more than last time did. >> people are paying attention. four in ten saying this is going to matter, be important to their vote, although worth noting about six in ten of the people said this wasn't going to be all that important. when you dig inside the numbers it shows that key parts of president obama's coalition african-americans, latinos, are actually putting a high importance on the debates which actually kind of shows the challenge that mitt romney has to actually get his side as enthusiastic about it.

were saying you are not support of at this point of how much effort the president or mitt romney hachette -- mitt romney has put into this so far you are not a fan of either solution? >> it is more than just them. it is the team that works with them. they have not come up with something that works. >> i think neither candidate right now has a comprehensive plan that leads the six principles we're talking about. president obama does not really have a plan because his plan is his budget but his budget was rejected unanimously by the senate and house in the last two years so he has to start over again. mitt romney has a plant -- p lan he has not provided enough specifics and some of the specifics, the numbers did not at that. that is why it is critically important for both to be most pacific -- more specific, more solutions oriented in the debate so we can make an informed choice about who to support and they can claim they have a mandate. the people can then be involved to help get a fiscal burden next year. it is critically important. >> will you be watching the presidential debat

nominee mitt romney are campaigning today but their running mates are taking to the stage. vice president joe biden will rally in florida around 9:00 this morning. meanwhile, republican vice presidential candidate paul ryan is in new hampshire. this is not a live picture, but him at the event from this morning. despite the small size, new hampshire has become a key battle ground state. ryan was there just last week. the latest polls show the president ahead of mitt romney in nine battle ground states. mr. obama's biggest leads are in ohio, new hampshire, and iowa. of course, this could change in the weeks to come. the tightest races at this point are nevada and north carolina. the national average of those polled has president obama with a 49.5%, the potential vote 44% for romney. >>>in this weekend's presidential address president obama is calling on congress to help homeowners. >> last week mortgage rates were at historic lows. but instead of helping more and more hard working families take advantage of those rates. congress was away on break. instead of worrying about you they had alre

on wednesday. republican challenger mitt romney is spending the weekend cramming for the debate. political analysts say he needs a strong showing with recent polls showing him losing ground to the president in battleground states. >>> the university of denver is preparing to host that debate. it is going to focus on domestic policy and it will be mod rated by jim lehrer. two more presidential debates will be held on the 16th and 22. you can of course watch those debates live here on ktvu channel 2. coverage begins at 6:00. >>> while the election is on tuesday, november 6, some voters have already cast their ballots. 32 states and the district of columbia offer some form of early voting. iowa began last week. ohio starts tuesday. volunteers from the obama and romney camps are canvassing neighborhoods looking for early votes and it's an important strategy because it allows those parties to bank votes more than a month before election day. >>> congressional roles are forcing republican vice presidential nominee paul ryan to donate a gift he received out on the campaign trail. he attended a ba
, and last night when we heard governor romney talk about states as the laboratory of democracy so while that may have been a republican democrat comment it got me thinking about our mayor and the work that they do in their communities and i'm going to hand the floor over to them. if you could both talk a little bit about how you see the future of american politics. >> thank you for having us first of all and thanks to all of you for coming to this event. i do believe that our politics is local and as mayor i've had the opportunity to witness decision-making on a local level that has implications for the state and federal government. i will just briefly talk about my background and how i first got into the position as mayor. holyoke is a small city of about 40,000 people outside of springfield in the western part of massachusetts. i was born and raised there and went to the city's public schools became the first to my family to go on to college and when i got to brown studied urban studies there and like a lot of folks my age i chose to come back to my hometown and give back to the city

on the disastrous performance on the economy. having said that, the president's strong point against mitt romney was foreign policy. i think we have seen that argument unravel that this president has been asleep at the switch. he has been incompetent and lied to the american people. he has let others lie. the president had superior knowledge and permitted his subordinates to make false statements. so i think foreign policy will be a key factor because it's the last debate before the election day. >> joe, last word? >> i think he makes a good point. i think the issue will turn on national security begins at home, our economy and job creation. 4 million jobs created after the first year of the obama administration, legitimate issue to say he is making progress. on foreign policy, i think it should be an issue of what we just discussed. but i think it will be laid in the context of the president not only having stopped the war in iraq, gone and violated pakistani air space, which wasn't done before, and getting al qaeda in pakistan, that's bin laden and putting it in the context of 12 embassies att
